However, there are a lot of decisions you need to make, as well as a number of pitfalls. So let’s look at some of the more important decisions.
Buying A Camera
Obviously the most important decision you will make is what camera to buy. However, it is an easy decision.
If you are really serious about your new hobby then buy the most expensive and feature rich camera you can afford. I personally love the Canon SLR range (you can find it in our Digital SLR section). Go for an SLR camera and buy the lenses you will need. For instance, if you are going to take close up shots, a macro will be a good buy. For long range shots get a good telephoto lens.
If you are still trying out beginning photography and don’t want to spend a lot of money on something you might not continue with, then your options is to either buy a cheap, basic SLR or a very good “point-and-shoot” digital camera, like the Sony Cybershot with 10x zoom and 10 megapixels. The main things you should be looking at is zoom, megapixels and advanced features like shutter speed and white balancing.
Using Your Camera
Huh?! You just point and shoot, right? Wrong. The difference between a decent and a good (or great!) photo depends on so many things. Composition of the picture, focusing, getting exposure right, the list goes on…
If you really want to take great pictures, you need to either take a digital photography course or get a guide to help you through all the advanced stuff. Digital Photography Success is a brilliant guide, I cannot recommend it enough.
Whichever route you take, remember: Get somebody to show you the ropes and then practise, practise, practise!
